School infrastructure

The 1K Project

A peer-funding model that pools small contributions to close infrastructure and resource gaps in under-served schools.

Why it matters

Books are not enough on their own

At Murambo we found one room serving as classroom, staff room, office and food store; a classroom without windows, doors or a full roof; no latrines; and teachers working without pay for months.

The 1K Project is our response. By pooling resources from many people we can address the causes of educational inequality, not only the symptoms.

How it works

Many small gifts, one school at a time

  1. 01

    Listen to the community

We work with parents, teachers and local leaders to identify the most urgent needs in a school.

  2. 02

    Pool small gifts

Many donors and partners each give a little, creating a shared fund for that school.

  3. 03

    Fund what lasts

The pool pays for infrastructure, teacher support and learning resources.
